Elgin

27 year family tradition. The Bookout;s, Biel's, and Tilson's all go out to Elgin to cut our Christmas trees. We have grown over the years, added some husbands and wives, and a few little ones. Always such an amazing time.

Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving 2010~ Katie's first Thanksgiving:

Day was beautiful, while Korbin and Jason were playing ball outside, the cold front came through and dropped the temp 20 degrees. We opened all the windows while we cooked. Such a great time. Kris fried the Turkey, and thanks to Central Market...we ate like royalty. Man, the food was super.
Jason, his Fiance Jess and her little girl, Bailey, came over. Bailey and Korbin hit it off! So nice for him to have someone his age to play with. She is a awesome kid.

Lake Whitney

The morning fog

Bill and Connie have a beautiful house out on Lake Whitney. We enjoy going out there, kinda like a mini vacation. Nice views, good food and  plenty of wine. Just a great time to chillax and enjoy some good company.

Holiday Baking...

This post will be updated frequently, with new recipies, pictures, and results!!

2 years ago I ventured into baking. Kris bought me a Kitchenaid Mixer a year prior and I found a new hobby. Around the holiday times, I started baking cookies. I got pretty good at it, even adjusting the recipes to our liking. Then I tried fudge. Got that down. With Christmas coming up, I had the idea to bake 'treats' as presents. Almost every night for a month we were trying new recipes. Kris and Korbin were the testers. They had to eat all the 'ugly' ones, the ones that messed up. Poor them! By the time it was time to give gifts I had a huge assortment; 2 types of fudge, a large variety of  the most delicious chocolate truffles, white peppermint bark candy, cookies galore, and banana bread. (Seems like there was more, but I can't remember)
Last year we all looked forward to all the treats...but with Tommy's death and getting pregnant I didn't get anything done.

So now we start again. Here is a new recipe I want to try this weekend  Pumpkin Truffles, along with trying out my new ( Christmas present last year) candy thermometer I will do some fudge!!

<<<UPDATE: 11/14

Korbin and I made million dollar fudge
 It turned out soooo goood!!!!!!!!

We LOVE fudge!

HA! Just kidding
Silly brother.

( If you can't tell, I'm enjoying this blogging)

Our typical evenings

This is more of documentation, a way for me to know that one day we will look back on this time and laugh.

Some common phrases that you will hear at our house in the evenings are; just hold her for a second while I pee. Oh crap, hurry get me something, she just spit up all over the place. I’ll hold her; you just eat while it’s hot.

From the time I get home with the kids (3:30) till about 5:00 Katie is one happy baby. She nurses, plays, talks, rolls over, laughs and will entertain her self, no problem.
Then the crying begins.
We bounce, we sway, we walk, we sing, we pat, we put her down ( thinking she is just sick of us), we try to nurse, we try a bottle, we offer her a pacifier, we change her diaper, we swaddle, we wear her/walk around. All during the hours of 5pm-9ish. We tag team. One of us does all the above while the other cooks dinner. (Well, Kris doesn’t nurse her) We take turns eating. Around 9:00 Korbin goes to bed, Katie settles a little. I start working on the kitchen, cleaning, washing bottles and run and take a shower. Katie will either shower with me, or we give her a bath. She LOVES bath/shower time. By 10:00 we are ready for bed, some nights she will stay asleep, others I will nurse her back to sleep. She sleeps in a bassinet/play pen next to our bed. At 12:30 she nurses again, and back to sleep. 2:30 up again, and then she sleeps for a good 3 hours. After 5:30 she either sleeps till 8am or is just fussy the whole time, sleeping on and off, nursing or just laying awake.

We do have periods of time during all this when she is fine for a few minutes. She will be crying and then just stop and laugh. She will doze off in our arms/up on our shoulder for a while. We struggle with not knowing if she is hungry. Sometimes she will nurse and spit it all up, then cry. Not wanting to nurse again, but refuses the bottle. Sometimes she will cry and act hungry but won’t nurse or take the bottle. She was taking a pacifier pretty well, but seems to have no interest in that now. If we are holding her, and put her down for a second on the couch/play mat she usually gets very mad. They say babies this young can’t be spoiled, so it must be something?

Like I said, I know this will pass. I want to read this in a few months and say “Aww, remember those evenings!”

Not to get to mushy, but Kris has been a savior. He is so calm with her, takes her when ever needed. Always lets me eat dinner 1st. I'm such a lucky girl to have my husband love me when I’m shoveling food in my mouth like a speed eater, with wet and dried spit up all over my shirt and pants. :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After reading this, I just want to say we know we are doing everything we can for her. We know babies sometimes just cry. We know she is not sick, and are so thankful for that. And after ever night, we are so unbelievably happy. It's not that bad. Like I said in the opening, this is just a documentation. Peace.

Cameron Park Zoo

The Waco Zoo is such a beautiful place, and we had such a great time!
Most of the animals were out and moving, unlike most of the zoo trips when the animals are asleep or put up. Katie did so great. Half the time, I wore her in my handy dandy peanut shell. That thing is so comfy and has been a life saver! The rest of the time she cruised in the stroller. She got fussy when it was nap time ( daddy said she was having a stimulation overload) so we stopped at the food court and took a break. Katie went to sleep on Kris's shoulder.
Korbin did wonderful, too! Didn't even cry when I kept making him take pictures.

One of my favorite animals is the elephant, and the big guy was drinking water when we saw him! So cool. Korbin's favorite was the otter, Katie's was the aquarium and Kris's was the Comodo Dragon ( why?). The otter house was really neat. They had a slide going through the water, and while you slid down the otter swam around you. I even went down the slide. Korbin and I decided we wanted a monkey and an otter. :)
So yeah for such a great day! Enjoy some pictures;

3 months old

So hard to believe that this time last year we were just a few days pregnant.

It seems like every time we get something down, get a schedule, little Katie changes it all. Her new tricks as of today are; rolling over, grabbing things after much concentration, laughing and talking. She is very vocal. Cooing and Gaga-ing. Lucky for us, I guess she will be a talker like her big brother!

( this video doesn't show off her talking as much as I'd like, but getting it on camera has been difficult.)

Korbin is getting more confident holding her. He was anxious of her being so fragile, but the other night he held her and sang to her for about 30 minutes.
Oh, speaking of singing. Korbin and I have been trying to remember all the songs we used to sing at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church. Some of those songs were fun. The Hippo Song We now sing a few to Katie when she is fussy, and of course we know she loves it.
We have only taken Katie out a few times in public. She is still too fussy to really go anywhere. Slowly we are getting her out more and more. This weekend we are taking the kids to the zoo. Should be fun! If anything, I will get some good pictures.:)

Halloween

Lord, I hope I can type this story good enough so you understand the pure hilarity of the situation.

Typical Sunday morning, October 31st 9:30am. I had just woken up (thank you Kris for taking Katie and letting me sleep in!) Kris was cleaning his gun. Korbin was playing on the computer. The door bell rings. Now, apparently we live on a desert island, because we NEVER have visitors. :(
So we were surprised, Korbin goes and looks through the peep hole. He stares through the hole for a few moments, and Say's “Uh, Kris there is a cow at the door. Kris come here, there is a cow at the door!" Kris opens the door to a cow trick or treating. Kris tells the poor cow that we don't have any candy this early in the morning, but the cow says nothing back. Just stands there with its plastic HEB bag of candy. Well, at this point Kris assumes the cow is mentally retarded and doesn't want to shut the door in it's face. So he just leaves the door open and goes back to cleaning his gun. I'm sitting there, nursing Katie, asking what the heck was going on. Korb says " mom, there is a 40 year old cow at the door!” Kris never said anything to me, the cow is still standing at the door, Korb is freaking out and I am clueless.
So, yes. It was Mimi. In a full head to toe cow costume. She surprised us. Kris never knew it was her. Korbin saw grey hair sticking out from the mask and guessed the age of the cow at 40.
Nope, couldn’t tell it good enough. Kinda like ‘you had to be there’ thing.  We all laughed so hard. It was freaking funny. Kris said he didn’t know what to do, how he was going to get this cow to leave. Mimi didn’t know what to do when Kris left the door open.

Alrighty then, Katie was a lady bug and Korbin was some guy wearing a Halloween mask. We took the kids to the local park, they had some food and games. Katie cried the whole time.

Fast foward to present day...

I'm not back tracking and giving our life before now. If you're reading this you know. Right?
Anyway. Most recently; Korbin tried out for UIL Math Sense yesterday. He thinks he did pretty well; he answered 23 questions out of 40, timed. We should know if he made it to the next round in a few days. He is pretty excited. For some reason he loves math, and is really good at it. I say that because your child’s intelligence is not something they inherit from mom or dad.
Katie...man, what a little drama queen already! Past few days she has been sleeping all day. No really. Sunday Mimi surprised us when she showed up at the door dressed as a cow. Hilarious story, I will tell you later. So she drives all the way to Waco and Katie sleeps for 5 hours. No, not a typo. 5 hours. Tuesday Grand (aka Peggy, the lovely lady that watches Katie during the day) tells me she slept for 6 hours. Uh, Katie, honey, can you do that AT NIGHT? So she has been sleeping and eating like crazy. They say babies do that when they are going through a growth spurt, either physically or developmentally. I would say that is true, considering last night she was holding her head up so good during tummy time and rolled over a million times. I think she is trying to crawl. ;-p.

Yes, she is still fussy. Still spits up 99% of anything we feed her. Still wakes up every 2 hours at night to eat ( or play). She was recently put on a stronger medication, but we haven't really noticed a difference. Probably just going to take her off it and pray this passes soon. Doc says it gets better between 4-6 months. Just a little longer.

The Beginning

Well I guess I will try this.
I feel like we live a million miles from the world. Trying to keep everyone informed of our awesome life is becoming a full time job. I have facebook, myspace, twitter and snapfish...why not blog too? I've decided to go ahead and be one of those mom's who take a million pictures and videos and continuously force them on all the world. :) I'm ok with that.
So, welcome to our blog. I may post every day, or once a moth. I hope to at least keep it up to share Katie and Korbin's accomplishments. They are, as if you didn't know, the most amazing kids in the universe.
Enjoy.
